The god of wine
Victorian Labradorite Cameo of Bacchus in a Rose Gold Ring, circa 1870 & later
Labradorite is a mineral that has only been found since 1770 on the Labrador Peninsula in eastern Canada. With a dark, gray-blue base color, this material appears slightly greenish or electric blue, depending on the incidence of light. In the late 19th century, it was particularly popular for sculptural carvings, as the three-dimensionality of Labradorite heightens its effect. Sometimes it seems as if these gems glow from within, sometimes the material appears iridescent like the wing of a morpho butterfly due to its lamellar structure. This ring presents a cameo of this unusual stone: it depicts Bacchus or Dionysus, the ancient god of wine and intoxication. Small vine leaves and grapes in his hair reveal his identity. His face with its rustling beard is finely cut. Two sparkling diamond slivers represent his eyes and give him a wild look. Since labradorite as a material is quite sensitive to impact, it was mostly used for pins and brooches. The showpiece of this ring also once belonged to an antique brooch of the years around 1870, before the ring was forged from high-carat red gold for this purpose. Worn with care, it is now a wonderful and unusual conversation piece that pays homage to the god of wine.
