Off to the honeymoon

Romantic Honeymoon Brooch with Rubies & Diamonds in Gold, circa 1900

Among all nations, the British especially loved jewelry with hidden messages. This brooch, for example, is not only a decorative and precious piece of jewellery made of gold, rubies and small diamonds - but at the same time, in Victorian times, it signalled to everyone that its wearer had recently tied the knot. The brooch can be seen as a bit of a word puzzle: We see, set entirely with rubies and diamonds, a crescent moon and three petals set within it. The moon appears as a narrow, curved crescent; the rosy petals, however, stand for honey, for their scent and nectar are equally sweet. Together, then, they symbolically represent the word "honeymoon", the term commonly used in the English-speaking world for a honeymoon. Such brooches were very popular in late Victorian times and were usually given to young brides by their husbands as wedding gifts. Here, the fine gemstone setting corresponds with the content of the honeymoon brooch. In the language of gemstones, the ruby as a red gemstone stands for love, while the diamond as the hardest mineral on earth symbolizes eternity. So it is the idea of eternal love that is inherent in this brooch. A total of 20 diamonds and 18 rubies have gathered here. This piece of jewellery was created on the threshold from the Victorian to the Edwardian period. It is excellently preserved and is still suitable today as a romantic gift, a hidden message between two lovers, the meaning of which is only revealed to outsiders at second glance.
