Chastity shepherd

Romantic Locket Pendant With Enamel Painting, France Circa 1870

Finding beautiful antique enamel work that has survived without much damage is tremendously difficult, even for diligent dealers. That is why we are especially pleased to present here not only antique and beautiful, but also highly interesting piece of jewelry from the France. The pendant presents in its center a slightly domed field with fine enamel painting. Here we see quite in the style of the famous rococo painter François Boucher a young lady as a shepherdess with with colorful clothes in an Arcadian landscape. There is a piece of soul painting in these works: Thus, the nature of the representation is about much more than the image of a girl: it is about depicting emotion, beauty and soul, which should be found in the supposedly carefree pastoral life. Elaborate framing with delicate bows and small flowers gives the pieces a serene and precious appearance. Set with shimmering natural pearls as well as small garnets harmonized beautifully with the pastel enamel colors. Velvet ribbon or a silk cord can also be pulled through the top, removable bow. All elements are wonderfully fine and designed by hand. The design language is based on the French Rococo and at the same time gives an indication of the time of origin of the piece: Especially in the 1860s, these historical models were stylistically taken up again, but the increasingly rapid industrialization led to a romantic love of the countryside of the population living in the cities. The work, painted in the finest manner on metal, was probably created in Limoges. Already in the Middle Ages Limoges was the leading center of European enamel production. A large number of mainly ecclesiastical decorations were created in the French city, which were spread across the entire continent by a widely ramified trade network. On the back, the piece of jewelry has a glazed medallion compartment. The pendant is well preserved and a small insight into the spirit of the 19th century - because just as contemporaries at the time looked nostalgically at the 18th century and sometimes transfigured it, so we look at their time today.

Bucolic is a subject of art in which the life of shepherds is idealized. Sung about by poets and depicted by artists since ancient times, the enthusiasm for the subject runs through time and art history. Famous artists from Poussin to Watteau were inspired by the free and supposedly carefree life of shepherds. A new enthusiasm for bucolic motifs took place in the graduated of the Industrial Revolution. At the moment of the loss of traditional ways of life, it celebrated once again in a romantic manner the country life, the carefree happiness under the open sky, unconcerned and without obligations of office, Kontor or factory. Similar to the late 18th century under Marie Antoinette, a longing for the countryside broke its spell here, which in the backward-looking transfiguration of the rural could at the same time develop a utopia for the future, in order to live more freely and at the same time in closer togetherness.
