Regard

Romantic "Acrostic Ring" with gemstones & pearls, Great Britain circa 1840

The idea of wearing a ring solely for adornment is quite new. Much more often in the 19th century, rings were of sentimental significance. The present ring spells out a message: The word "regard" reveals itself here to initiates. The word is an acronym made up of the first letters of the gemstones used. To do this, start clockwise with the first ruby: Ruby / Emerald / Garnet / Amethyst / Ruby / Diamond. The last letter, the "D", is also the center of a flower made of fine natural pearls. As one petal is formed by a pear-shaped, elongated pearl, the flower also takes on the shape of a violet. Its English name "pansy" derives from the French term "(herbe de la) pensée", plant of remembrance. In floral language, it signaled "think of me". The flower is adjoined on the left and right by the finely worked, golden shank with scroll ornaments. In its design and workmanship, the ring is in keeping with the taste of the years around 1840, the transitional period between the Georgian and Victorian Era. It is beautifully preserved and came to us from London.
