A gift between lovers
Romantic bangle with moonstone & pearls in gold, around 1900
During the last years of Queen Victoria's reign, jewellery set with moonstones became popular in Britain. These moonstones usually came from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), the island just south of India that became famous for its rich gemstone deposits and, like India, was part of the great British Empire. Not only oval or round moonstone cabochons were popular, but also those that were cut into hearts - a cut that no other gemstone received at that time. This was probably due to the importance of the moonstone, which was attributed to it in India and which thus also reached Victorian England. In 1913, the American gemologist George Frederick Kunz remarked on the importance of the moonstone in India: "As a gift for lovers the moonstone takes a high rank, for it is believed to arouse the tender passion, and to give lovers the power to read in the future the fortune, good or ill, that is in store for them." (Kunz, The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, 1913, p. 98). The present bangle is a typical piece of jewelry of the late Victorian period and presents such a heart-shaped cut moonstone amid natural seed pearls. Two leaf-shaped elements frame the heart like a flower, and the hoop is curved into two delicate bands of gold. A romantic piece of jewellery from a time that particularly appreciated the symbolism of precious stones.
