Romantic navette ring with pearl & rubies, circa 1900/2019

As an antique jewellery dealer, we sometimes receive pieces of jewellery that no longer seem wearable as they are. We then have these reworked by our goldsmith to give them a new life. In the case of the following ring, it was a part of an earring that our goldsmith combined with an antique ring band. The result is a navette ring, a type of ring that was popular in the 1900s - the very years in which the two elements that now make up the ring were created. All three gemstones used in this ring have romantic symbolism. The ruby, for example, as the ladies' journal Bazar wrote in 1886, is "the symbol of the most passionate and ardent love," while the diamond, because of its hardness, is considered a symbol of eternity. The pearl, on the other hand, shares its origin with Venus, the goddess of love, and is thus considered her jewel; for like the pearl, according to legend, the goddess also emerged from a shell. The rubies and diamonds used here are shaped in ancient cuts, while the pearl is a natural pearl probably from the Persian Gulf, with a slightly baroque finish and a rose-coloured luster. Lush yellow gold and platinum-embellished ring shoulders complete the design.
