Rose gold bracelet with Persian turquoises, England circa 1900

In earlier times, pieces of jewellery often conveyed a message. Persian turquoise in particular played a very special role in Biedermeier jewellery: not only was the foreign beauty of the strong light blue gemstones valued, but above all the significance of their colour was important to the people of this era. Thus, in the age of Romanticism, it was not surprising that people recognized the petals of the Forget-Me-Not in the small, usually round-cut turquoise and used the stone in this literal meaning. In this way, wonderful gifts of love were created, which, with the help of precious stones, used a secret language of the time, which could be read by contemporaries. This bracelet is also set with six Persian turquoises. The turquoise gemstones are shaped as oval cabochons and set the bracelet in a shell pattern, the links of which widen towards the centre and form a decorative show side. Crafted in Victorian-era England, the jewel is made of rose gold with a fineness of 9 carats. We can assume that the piece of jewelry was once a romantic, meaningful gift of love. Whether this was a brief flirtation or the gift had further success cannot be said for certain. What is certain is that the bracelet, with its beautiful history, can still be an enchanting little jewel in any collection of Victorian jewellery.
