Vow of Love

Red gold bracelet with garnets after Victorian model, London 1989

The second half of the 20th century saw the creation not only of jewellery that was oriented towards the cool, modernist avant-garde of its time, but also of jewellery that looked longingly to the past. One such piece of jewellery is this bracelet, which, according to its stamp, was made in 1989 in Great Britain, where we also discovered it. The design of the bracelet is closely based on late Victorian models: The link bracelet with a heart-shaped lock as clasp had once been one of the most successful designs of the years around 1900. These so-called "love padlock bracelets" were intended as a romantic gift to symbolically seal a couple's love for eternity. The tradition is still alive today, according to which young couples attach a padlock to bridges and throw the key into the water to express their wish for an eternal union. So, too, despite its Victorian model, this bracelet is still a speaking, understanding piece of jewelry today. Right down to the use of rose gold, as antique pieces are usually made of a reddish gold alloy, the attention to detail here extends. Seven small garnet cabochons stud the flowing links. From a historical perspective, their use is extremely fitting, as garnets were once considered symbols of permanence.
