A tradition lives on
Vintage snake ring with 0,50 ct diamonds in gold, London 1954
This ring in high-carat yellow gold shows the bodies of two snakes, entwined in a tight coil. This motif of the snake, which in mythology stands for self-renewing time, i.e. eternity, was already known to the ancient Egyptians - in Europe it experienced a renaissance during the Biedermeier period and later also in Art Nouveau. The ring presented here was made in Great Britain, according to its hallmark. Its goldsmith used the motif to create a particularly precious ring. The heads of the two animals each present a full-cut diamond, both diamonds together weighing about half a carat. In addition, four small rubies are set into the heads of the snakes as eyes. In England rings of this kind are called "promise rings", because they are often based on a promise. These rings were often gifts of an everlasting friendship or were worn as a sign of an indissoluble love and attachment.
Since ancient times, the snake has fascinated people. On the one hand dangerous because of its poison and cunning, shunned as the seductress of Eve in paradise, on the other hand admired because of numerous abilities attributed to it. In ancient Egypt and Greece it was regarded as a symbol of eternal life, as the cleverest animal on earth and, as it were, as the symbolic animal of the god of medicine, Asclepius. Jewellery with snake motifs then gained great popularity, especially in the early 19th century; you will find some snake rings and pieces of jewellery with snake motifs handed down from the Biedermeier period in our range.
