Think of me tenderly...

Beautiful Victorian gold bracelet with turquoises, Great Britain circa 1900

Romantic bracelets are a typically British invention. Always ready, despite the supposed "stiff upper lip", to give the beautiful and romantic a place even in everyday life, the fashion of meaningful bracelets flourished among the British in the decades around 1900 like no other. Especially the bracelets with coloured gemstones, shining in the warm glow of the typical red gold of the time, are still a popular gift today. Whether as a bar bracelet or in a tank pattern, they add a playful touch. The gold bracelet here shows up as a classic bar bracelet or "gate bracelet" that consists of moveably mounted bars. It is set with eight Persian turquoises that seem to float in delicate settings on small bars. The light blue colour of the turquoise reminds us of the blossoms of the forget-me-not, and it was in this literal function that it was to become the setting for jewellery. This romantic piece of jewellery was made in Great Britain in the years around 1900. A look at contemporary jeweller's catalogues shows how common these jewels were in Great Britain. We show a page from the 1901 catalogue of the Goldsmith & Silversmith Company in London, which shows a very similar design.

Adorning the wrist serves more than anything else for one's own pleasure: bracelets and bangles are some of the few pieces of jewellery that their wearer can look at even without a mirror. Easily movable and sensual, they capture the eye at the same time, whether it is a delicate, swinging white gold bangle from the turn of the century or a wide gold bracelet that is also an investment.
