pas de deux
Sweeping Toi-et-Moi ring with diamonds & natural pearl, circa 1905
Toi-et-Moi rings are among the most romantic pieces of jewellery of all. Even their French name, "You and I", predestines them as a gift of love. Napoléon Bonaparte gave his future wife Joséphine de Beauharnais such a ring as a betrothal gift in 1796. In this type of ring, two gemstones set opposite each other always symbolise the merging of two souls. This sentimental motif was particularly popular at the turn of the century: people loved to play with symbols. In the imagination of the time, man and woman stand opposite each other as lovers; recognizable as independent elements, yet firmly united by their feelings and symbolically united in one piece of jewelry. In the case of this ring, it is a sparkling old-cut diamond and a shimmering natural pearl that are joined together on the dynamically curved ring rail as if in an eternal dance. The ring was forged in the years shortly after 1900 from warmly luminous yellow gold with shoulders of platinum. Fourteen smaller rose-cut stud diamonds accompany the two large focal points of this graceful creation. The ring is in very good condition and is a beautiful testament to bygone romantic days.
