Precious and dressy
Rare antique gold link chain, circa 1825
Gold was extremely scarce and precious in those days shortly after the Napoleonic Wars - but more affordable than the precious metal itself was the handwork. Thus we often find pieces of jewellery from the early years of the 19th century that were worked with the greatest effort. The aim of the fine techniques was to produce sculptural and voluminous pieces of jewellery from only small amounts of gold. Thus, the present necklace is also pleasantly light to wear despite its present links. Countless oval links line up horizontally and are alternately smoothly polished and finely structured, creating a play of light on the gold surfaces. A smaller ring is soldered to the side of each of these elements, through which another seemingly endless row of connecting gold rings runs, thus creating a chain: An effort of craftsmanship that can hardly be measured and impresses all the more by the fineness of its execution. Necklaces like this were a great fashion throughout Europe. In the Great Britain of the Georgian Era, the period of rule by Hanoverian kings between 1714 and 1837, they were just as popular as the so-called "long chain" or "guard chain" as they were in Germany or France during the Restoration. Today, however, only a few of these chains have survived and are therefore very sought after. Our chain is with 42,0 cm quite short and is worn close to the neck. The clasp, which shows sculptural volute reliefs and a floral motif, also allows a more precise dating. The necklace is still wearable after almost two centuries. A particularly typical piece of Biedermeier jewellery!
