No moss, no fuss

Rare gold bracelet with moss agates, Scotland circa 1870

Every year in August, Queen Elizabeth II goes to Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands for her summer retreat. In doing so, she follows a tradition that has existed since the days of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Together with her husband Albert, she bought the estate in the picturesque Highlands in 1847 and had it magnificently extended. Victoria and her family fell in love with the rugged northern countryside and all things Scottish became fashionable throughout the country. Traditional clothing and especially jewelry were a must among all members of the upper class who came to Scotland to hunt and fish. Especially the semi-precious stones found in the Cairngorm mountains west of Balmoral were used in this jewellery and gave it a local patriotic touch. This type of jewellery is now known as "pebble jewellery". The present bracelet from around 1870 is such a typical Scottish piece of jewellery. The bracelet consists of moss agates in wide settings of high-carat gold. The colour of the five so-called dendrite agates used here is milky white, greyish to beige, are beautifully interspersed with inclusions that give the impression that small trees or branches are enclosed in the stone. Small chains are double around it as a cord edge. The oval elements of the bracelet are movably connected by ball elements and lie softly around the wrist of the wearer. The bracelet is still wonderfully preserved after almost 150 years - and a piece of British history to touch.
