Reminder of "LK"

Sentimental ring of gold & braided hair, Biedermeier circa 1830

Gifts from one's own hair were a great fashion in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially during the Romantic and Biedermeier periods. The family, one's own home and friends played a major role in the life of the time. In this context, pieces of jewellery made of hair were also created, which, as particularly personal gifts (because hair is, after all, a part of one's own body!), were intended to express an intimate bond. This finely woven ring made of hair has an engraved element of gold and silver in its centre. Its clear form is designed like a frame. In it is the engraved monogram "LK". Even today, some 170 years after its creation, the ring still amazes the observer: so finely, so filigree braided, we have touching Biedermeier craftsmanship before us.

In her publication on "Schmuck des Biedermeier" (Jewellery of the Biedermeier era), Munich 1983, Brigitte Marquardt reproduces on p. 208 some pieces of jewellery of the commemorative culture of the 19th century made of human hair and explains their meaning: The processing of hair into pieces of jewellery is based on the meaning of hair as part of the whole human being, which is, as it were, immortal due to its durability. In popular belief, hair is the seat of life force. Jewellery of this kind was often given as gifts by marrying daughters to their mothers, for in this way, in the truest sense of the word, a part of the child leaving home could remain with the loving mother and be an everlasting reminder, even if the daughter had now set up her own household.
