Thank you for the flower!

Stylish flower brooch by Theodor Fahrner with rose quartz, around 1960

"The beauty of clothing is enhanced to an extraordinary degree by the distinctive effect of Fahrner jewelry. No lady of taste will want to do without it in the future." (From a brochure of the company Theodor Fahrner from the 1920s) Theodor Fahrner made artists' jewelry affordable because he combined modern forms with democratic materials. He did not create individual pieces for a small elite like Lalique or Cartier, but rather the designs were mass-produced in silver, decorated with enamel, marcasites and occasionally precious stones. Jewelers and department stores throughout Europe sold the jewelry, which Fahrner advertised extensively in journals and magazines: "Fahrner Jewelry - based on designs by the best artists" allowed every woman to participate in a modern life full of beauty. Every year, traveling salesmen with large sample cases presented the new products developed in Pforzheim to local jewelers. One such sample case full of unworn Fahrner jewelry had lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until it was offered to us. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the company's dissolution in 1979. The brooch presented here is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. The brooch shows as a large flower made of gold plated silver with a square faceted rose quartz in the center. The petals show an interesting surface structure in the style of the post-war period and thus an exciting form with beautiful play of light is created. The brooch was probably executed in the years around 1960, because it speaks the formal language of that era. A wonderful overview of the wealth of designs can be found in the catalog "Theodor Fahrner. Schmuck zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition", edited by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005. Fahrner jewelry is often collected.
