Verneuil's performance

Stylish vintage ear clips with purple verneuil sapphire in gold, circa 1965

Auguste Verneuil made a major breakthrough in the technique of growing gemstones in 1891, which revolutionized the jewelry world at the turn of the century. Verneuil's laboratory-developed corundums - synthetic sapphires and rubies - were almost indistinguishable in structure and color from natural stones and became the dernier cri of the fashion world, making jewelry set with large stones more affordable. How widespread the synthetic corundum, in the time of origin of this jewelry was, shows, for example, an essay by the German mineralogist Dr. Alfred Eppler, who wrote about this just in the year 1910 in the Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitung: "Since science and technology have progressed so far to produce beautiful artificial rubies, some of which have succeeded so exquisitely that even the most subtle aids of the scholar threaten to fail in distinguishing them from the natural ones, why should one limit their possible use?" (Alfred Eppler: Synthetische Edelsteine, in: Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitung 7 (1910), p. 61f., here p. 62). Nevertheless, a lively discussion arose as to whether synthetic stones should always be declared. A colorful ear jewelry is the present pair of ear clips made of gold, which we discovered in the west of the republic. In the center of each cushion-shaped showpiece shines a corundum made in the Verneuil process in a strong violet. The frames of gold each display a fine cord band that stylishly surrounds the settings of the gemstone. The earrings can be worn without pierced earlobes thanks to a strong clip. The success of these lab-grown gemstones is immediately apparent when viewing this pair: The stones have a radiance and intensity of color that make them look like the best and highest quality gemstones.
