Vintage sapphire ring in gold with diamonds, Paris circa 2000

Finding large, untreated sapphires today has become difficult. This is because almost all of the gemstones available on the market today have been altered either by heating, irradiation or by being filled with coloured glass in order to visually improve the colour and purity of the stones. Therefore, we are particularly pleased with this piece of jewellery, which came to us from Vienna. The ring, made of high-carat gold, immediately captivates the observer, so large, so beautiful is the sapphire it holds. The gemstone, held by eight small claws, has a weight of about 8.00 carats and shows a very good transparency with hardly noticeable inclusions. It shows a bright blue, which is more intense or softer depending on the incidence of light. The narrow yellow gold rail forms diamond-set ring shoulders. They are set with a total of six brilliant-cut diamonds of beautiful quality, framing the octagonal-cut sapphire on either side. A French maker's mark on the outside of the ring's band shows a small butterfly and the initials SR in a rombus, plus the so-called "petite garantie" for high-carat gold. So we can safely say that the ring was made in France, more precisely in Paris, and probably around the year 2000. To be sure that the light blue sapphire is genuine and untreated, the previous owner commissioned an expert opinion from the renowned institute of Professor Leopold Rössler in Vienna, confirming its naturalness and quality. Stones like this are absolute lucky finds and a guarantee for good value retention.

Blue sapphires from Sri Lanka are known as "Ceylon sapphires" and have been highly prized for centuries. These particular gemstones exhibit several distinctive features in their coloration, unmatched clarity, and luster, which almost always ranks higher in comparison to other blue sapphires found elsewhere on earth. However, as with all natural gemstone occurrences, the number of stones mined is very limited, so premium stones from Ceylon can only ever increase in value.
