Unworn garnet earrings in red gold plated silver
Garnets from Bohemia are a classic in the history of jewellery. They have been made into jewellery since ancient times, but especially in the late 19th century they were a great, indeed: worldwide fashion. Closely set with garnets, stars, blossoms and garlands adorned ladies, whether in Vienna, Berlin, Paris or even in the USA, as contemporary jewellery catalogues reveal. This pair of earrings shows the beauty of this gemstone from our neighbouring country. A flower staggered in three levels is set under an earwire with a practical hinged hoop. A small cluster of three garnets occupies the transition between the two parts. The blossom is attached in a movable manner and swings elegantly back and forth. The garnets used are genuine stones from Bohemia, which have a particularly deep red colour and were known in the Middle Ages as "carbuncle stones". The garnets are cut in the typical rose cut and set in rose-gold-plated, dark patinated silver, which gives the dark fire of the garnets the necessary space to unfold. By a lucky circumstance we became aware of a small, traditional manufactory, where garnet jewellery is still produced in the same way as in the years around 1900. The jewellery created here is made in elaborate handwork, but at the same time it is unworn. So you can be sure that all the stones in these earrings are firmly in place and perfectly crafted.
The garnet, as a dark and mysterious stone has always been the object of desire of people of all ages. Garnet jewelry fits almost every occasion and is therefore not only worn in the evening or on festive occasions. Most commonly used are the dark red pyrope garnets, which we also find in the piece of jewellery presented here. These gemstones come from localities in Bohemia and delight with their deep and rich color. Since the garnet as a gemstone is relatively insensitive, once acquired garnet jewelry can be a companion for a lifetime.
