The Company of Wolves
Unusual lapel pin with agate cameo of a wolf, around 1890
Many little everyday helpers are so common and everyday that we often can hardly imagine that even these little things once had to be invented. Getting along without them seems so arduous that it seems inconceivable that they have not always existed. The zipper is one such example, the Velcro fastener, or also: the safety pin. It was invented by the American inventor Walter Hunt, who applied for a patent in 1849. It quickly began its triumphant march around the world. This solid gold safety pin was probably once intended to fasten a tie or scarf during a hunt. Because as its showpiece it shows an unusual motif: a wolf. The wolf is carved into a layered agate stone so that its body stands out white and orange against the milky gray background. Hunting jewelry was extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many motifs such as foxes, hunting dogs and even ducks made of noble materials were allowed to decorate the hunters. The piece of jewelry with the rare motif is very well preserved. Thanks to its versatile form, it can be worn on a variety of occasions.
