Volute

Unusual brooch with diamonds & pearl, around 1890

The volute - from the Latin "volutum", rolled - is one of the classic elements of architecture and art. Originally borrowed from ancient architecture, rolled ornaments were soon found in all kinds of arts and crafts. If they are interpreted in a plant-like manner, one also speaks of a volute tendril. This unusual brooch represents such a volute vine. The elegant, asymmetrical curve is reminiscent of the rolled leaf of a fern. Numerous small rose diamonds stud the surface, while two larger old-cut diamonds and a gold-colored pearl set accents. The stones are set in silver, while gold plating on the back prevents them from staining the skin or clothing. The beautiful piece of jewellery was probably not always a brooch, but was first transformed into one - even though this seems to have happened in earlier times. One of the old-cut diamond settings seems to have been added at the same time, and the pearl is also a later addition. It is possible that it was originally an element of a tiara. We were able to discover the piece of jewellery as it is in Hamburg.
