So happy together
Unusual antique Toi-et-Moi ring with sapphire & diamonds, Germany circa 1900
Rings with curved bands, at the ends of which precious gemstones or pearls are presented, are first encountered in the late 19th century. The ring presented here shows a first-class old-european-cut diamond of about 0.60ct weight in the colour grade Top Wesselton with a clarity graded "vsi" and a blue sapphire in the middle of its elegantly swinging rail. The sapphire displays the unusual Sugarloaf cut that shapes it into a tall cabochon. The natural gemstone weighs about 1.80ct and, like the large brilliant, is set in pips that show off the stones' play of light beautifully. Ten old diamonds in historic old cuts accompany it as delicate bands on the ring shoulders. The ring is made of 18-karat yellow gold. The cuts of the smaller diamonds show that they were cut some time before the ring was forged, they are beautiful individual 19th century cuts of beautiful quality. Rings with two elements defining the design were understood in the late 19th century years to symbolize two lovers: Connected yet in motion, becoming one piece yet recognizable as separate elements: Is this not how a happy relationship should be? Already Napoléon Bonaparte adored such a ring to his future wife Joséphine de Beauharnais in 1796 for their engagement. In this type of ring, two gemstones set opposite each other always symbolise the merging of two souls. The ring, with its delight in beauty and its elegant movement, is still a beautiful, loving gift today! It found its way to us from Leipzig.
