Vegetables & Granulation

Unusual Diamond Ring of the Art Déco in Gold, Around 1935

The type of "vegetable" ring first appeared in Germany at the end of the 1920s and countered the cool, graphic geometry of Art Deco with a warm, playful counterpoint. This type of ring got its name from its decorations of vines and leaves, from which gemstones peek out like ripe fruit. Leaf ornaments also unfold on this fanciful ring we discovered in Nuremberg. This piece of jewellery, forged by hand in the 1930s, thrives on the contrast between the clearly defined outer form of its showpiece and the almost wildly proliferating filling of diamonds and gold inside. Four brilliant cut diamonds of beautiful quality are set into the rectangular ring head as if in a golden bed. Leaf shapes and small floral tendrils grow around them, guiding our gaze. To the left and right of the precious border, the ring shoulders display geometric patterns with the finest granulations. Tiny spheres of gold, which require the highest mastery from the goldsmith to fix them, in order not to melt together, form fine diamonds. What the Etruscans were already capable of, the early 20th century had to work hard to achieve. Nature and art thus combine to form a third, new one: a piece of jewellery, produced in one of the oldest techniques of the goldsmith's craft, which also tells a story! Numerous pieces of jewellery of this kind can be found, for example, in Christiane Weber: Schmuck der 1920er und 1930er Jahre in Deutschland, Stuttgart 1990, which help us to date our ring as well.
