Stars and Stripes

Unusual English gold ring with turquoise and diamond roses, circa 1890

This ring from around 1890 features a witty combination of Persian turquoises and beautiful old-cut diamonds alternating in diagonal rows. They divide the flat, oval ring head into a decorative striped pattern, which must have been immensely fashionable at the time the ring was made. The gemstones in this ring were not only selected for their beauty, but their symbolism also played a role. In the 19th century, turquoise was considered a gemstone that was endowed with all kinds of powers. The stones were supposed to protect their wearers from harm and were also considered an expression of true love. The colour of the rare mineral reminded the people of that time of the blossoms of the forget-me-not and in this sense they were also read. All these positive properties of turquoise, however, should only unfold if it was received as a gift! The diamond, on the other hand, as the hardest mineral on earth, is said to be indestructible and thus symbolizes duration and permanence. With this combination, the ring conveys the romantic message of eternal, never-ending love. Set in high-carat gold and silver, however, the harmonious interplay of the gemstones and their colours is also convincing from today's perspective. The ring is in first-class condition and is still suitable as a love gift today due to its message.

"He who was born in the cold month of December, the month of snow and ice and no cares, let him take a blue turquoise in his hand, and success will be his for ever." Author unknown, from a pamphlet published by Tiffany & Co. (1870)
