White on the move
Unusual Art Deco ring with 1,38 ct diamonds in platinum, around 1930
Diamond jewellery in pure, radiant white - jewellery designers and lovers have cherished this dream since the late 19th century. Initially, only silver was available to create white jewelry from, but the metal tarnishes and is not as bright as the diamonds themselves. Then, from the years around 1900, platinum was increasingly used. But it was difficult to work with and the metal was still much more expensive than gold, so that it mostly remained with platinum on the front side of the pieces. It was not until the 1930s that the price of platinum had converged with the price of gold to such an extent that solid pieces of jewellery were increasingly being made entirely from the precious metal. The present ring is such a piece of jewellery, which focuses entirely on the materiality of platinum and diamonds and thus on the non-colour white. Its special features and design result entirely from the skilful guidance of light and shadow: the entire front of the shield-like ring head, for example, has been structured in a checkerboard fashion by so-called shadow gaps. Each of these hand-sawn joints is lined with fine mille handles, which add an additional structure. The resulting fields are filled with small diamonds surrounding a large, central, transitional-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.65 ct. At one time in what was then Czechoslovakia, the ring received a stamp for pre-existing, older items. We were able to discover it in Vienna. Where might his journey take him next?
