Unusual ring with aquamarines & diamond roses in gold & silver, around 1920
The fact that the aquamarine was associated with water in Western culture is revealed by its name alone: it derives from the Latin word for sea water, aqua marina. But did you know that the diamond was also once closely associated with this element? In the early years of the diamond trade, the quality of a diamond was measured by its resemblance to clear, sparkling water: if it was completely clear, it was a "diamond of the first water". Shakespeare was already familiar with this expression, and in "Pericles" (1607) he mentions the "diamonds of a most praisèd water", the diamonds of the very first quality. The colour combination of the present ring alone may be reminiscent of water, spray and waves. It combines the two gemstones in an unusual design: instead of the usual wreath of brilliant-cut diamonds, a row of diamond roses is set around the central aquamarine, alternating with suitably cut aquamarines. The result is a visually staggered design. The settings of the gemstones are crafted in silver, which supports the cool colour chord. Only at the side does the high-carat gold rail become visible. An unusual ring whose design, gemstone cuts and workmanship allow us to date it to the years around 1920.
