Sunny Side Up

Unusual ring with untreated yellow sapphire & diamonds, around 1920

Sapphires are not always blue - in fact, this precious gemstone from the corundum group occurs in nature in the most wonderful hues, from olive green to the peach tones of the padparadscha sapphire to stones whose color changes in the light. These sapphires, which are not blue, are also called "fancy colour" sapphires. Only the red varieties of the mineral corundum are called ruby. The untreated sapphire in the center of the present ring is a cheerful, sunny yellow, accentuated by its faceting. Its color was created entirely without the intervention of human hands, inside the earth. The gemstone weighs 4.13 carats and displays a characterful so-called Ceylon cut such as we often find in gemstones from the ancient mines of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The stone is surrounded by twelve diamonds, also hand cut, which are shaped in the old cut. The gemstones are set in silver, while the ornamental gallery and plain ring band are worked in an early, still slightly yellowish white gold alloy. Import hallmarks of the KuK monarchy (Austria-Hungary) show that the ring was imported to Pest, today's Budapest, before 1922. We have had an external appraisal done on the ring, which confirms the quality of the materials used and names the replacement value at €5,200. It is in excellent condition and a wonderful jewel with individual character!
