Unique cocktail ring with aquamarine in white gold, dated 1938
Pieces of jewellery are very personal objects - how often do we associate memories and beautiful moments with jewels such as an engagement ring, a locket with engraving or a jewellery gift!? The ring at hand was not given its sentimental meaning after the fact, it was already designed with a specific memory in mind. Along its sides, monograms and a year disguise themselves as an ornamental setting: only at second glance do we read here "1938", "GB/BJ", "MCH" and "CJ/LM". Who the persons behind these monograms are and what event happened in 1938 remains hidden in the darkness of history. Perhaps the ring was a wedding anniversary gift, and the initials refer to the children of the family. Or perhaps it was a birthday present, and the initials refer to the people who put together the precious commissioned work. The ring, made of high karat white gold, sets as a showpiece a large aquamarine weighing about 30 carats of wonderful clarity and brilliance. The water-blue stone is scissor-cut and reflects the light along its many facets in various shades of blue. It is effectively framed only in a narrow mille handle setting, with a fine ring rail adjoining the side. In its noble reduction and cool colourfulness, the ring speaks the classic formal language of the Art Deco of its time. An unusual and timelessly designed ring that a skilled goldsmith must have once executed as a personal commission. It is in excellent condition. We were able to acquire it from a German private collection.
