Over the Rainbow
Unique vintage gold ring with large Welo opal & aquamarines, around 2000
"Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high There's a land that I heard of, once in a lullaby" Looking at the opal with which this one-of-a-kind ring is adorned, one could imagine oneself in a land beyond the rainbow, as in the famous song of the 1930s. Its wonderful play of colors displays a multitude of shimmering light reflections that cover the entire spectrum of the rainbow. In addition to greens, blues and yellows, we also see the rarer orange hues in the rather large stone, which sprays new flashes of color with every movement. The most important country of origin for opals has been Australia since the late 19th century. But since the 1990s, Ethiopia has also been supplying particularly high-quality opals. These African opals from the province of Afar are called Welo opals and are characterized by their high transparency and their often particularly good color intensity. This ring presents such an ethiophic opal from the Welo Valley in a high quality setting. The high-quality full opal is designed as a cabochon and is accompanied by two baguette-cut aquamarines. The unusual combination with the two aquamarines accentuates the blue tones of the center stone and the gold adds a pleasant warmth. The ring found its way to us from the Rhineland.
A dreamlike stone, the opal, whose special brilliance was praised in the highest terms by the ancient author Pliny at the dawn of time: "it possesses a fire finer than that of carbuncle, it has the purple sparkle of amethyst and the sea-green of emerald and a generally incredible mixture of light". As a stone of love and hope, but also as a symbol of multifaceted love, the following centuries have also revered it.
