Engagement ring in gold & platinum with diamond solitaire, British, circa 1960
Hardly any piece of jewellery has the meaning and symbolism of a diamond ring. The hardest mineral on earth has been worn for centuries as a sign of everlasting love and connection - a tradition that, according to the story, has its origins as early as 1477. In that year, Mary of Burgundy received a diamond ring from Archduke Maximilian of Austria as an engagement gift. However, it was not until the late years of the 19th century, 1886 to be exact, that the image of the diamond solitaire was coined as a classic engagement ring: Louis Comfort Tiffany invented a setting that raised the diamond above the rail, allowing plenty of light to reach it. Here is a diamond solitaire designed with simple, classic beauty and timelessness in mind. The central brilliant cut diamond has very good proportions and shines in a slightly warm toned white with very nice clarity. The brilliant-cut diamond weighs approximately 0.33 ct and is accompanied by four other smaller diamonds that add further sparkle to the ring shoulders. The ring is made of high karat gold, but the stone settings and ring shoulders are crafted in platinum to reflect the incoming light. Based on the cuts of the gemstones, we date the ring to around 1960, and a British fineness mark in the ring's band reveals its origin.
