Victorian amphora earrings in yellow gold, circa 1870

A great enthusiasm for antiquities was also reflected in jewellery in the second half of the 19th century. Numerous copies of Etruscan jewellery in particular were made, but the jewellery of ancient Rome and Egypt also served as inspiration for the jewellery makers. As time went by, the jewellery became more and more independent, but many forms and details were borrowed from the antique treasury of forms. The present earrings are based on Roman pointed amphorae, as they were used in antiquity to transport wine, for example. This was a very popular motif in the years around 1870, and a wide variety of designs for amphora-shaped jewellery were created. What is unusual here is the smooth finish without granulation and the great abstraction of the design, which make the earrings appear extraordinarily modern. The pair is made of gold, but hollow, so that it is pleasantly light to wear. An additional fine gold-plating makes the gold surface shine brightly. For dating purposes, we reproduce a fashion plate from 1869, which shows a lady with a very similar pair of earrings on her right hand (cf. the last illustration, from the "Journal des Demoiselles").
