Lover's Knot

Victorian gold earrings with knot motif, circa 1875

The knot motif has a long tradition in cultural history. Even among the Celts, an elaborate knot, the so-called "Celtic lover's knot", was considered a symbol of the bond between two people. But even in Victorian times, this tradition was still maintained, albeit modified: A wide variety of knot motifs were dubbed "lover's knot", love knots, and added a subtle symbolic layer to all manner of jewelry. The present pair of earrings also makes the knot the main motif. Each composed of a smooth and a structured gold band, the gold knots have an almost textile effect. A shiny gold ball occupies the centre of each. Below each is an amphora-shaped element that gently sways when moved. Because the earrings are hollow, they are pleasantly light to wear. Pendulum-shaped, long gold earrings like these were particularly favoured by fashion in the 1870s. However, it was to be only a short time before they went completely out of fashion in favour of smaller stud earrings or even naked earlobes, and so they soon disappeared back into the jewellery box. Possibly for this reason, the pair has survived with only a few traces of wear.
