Two faithful companions

Victorian Gold & Turquoise Knot Earrings, England circa 1900

A constantly varied motif in Victorian jewellery was the knot, which was not only decorative but also had a symbolic meaning. As so-called 'lover's knots', knots were supposed to make the indissolubility of a love or friendship visible. Brooches and rings, but also earrings were designed with the knot as a central design feature. This pair of earrings, which came to us from London, shows this old motif in an unusual design: the two knots are made double-laned and are not exactly identical. One knot appears to be braided from two bands while the other is composed of four bands. The subtle variance of the forms gives the pair a particular dynamism that characterized numerous jewelry designs in the years leading up to the turn of the last century. One thinks, for example, of the classic lavallières with their different long pendulums. The knots are made of 15-carat gold, a typically British alloy that was only used until 1932. At their centre, the knots each present a sky-blue turquoise sabochon on the front and back, which further underlines the sentimental symbolism of the earrings, as turquoises were often used because of their colour similarity to forget-me-nots. Due to their bright, warm hues but also their format, the late Victorian earrings are perfectly suited to accompany you during the day - just as they were intended to do in their time of origin.
