Right to the heart

Victorian gold arrow brooch, England circa 1900

The little god of love Cupid - mischievous and always up for pranks - is said, according to myth, to have shot not only with one kind of love arrows. On the one hand, he had golden arrows that caused the hit person to feel passionate love for another person, but on the other hand, he also had arrows made of lead that instead of love and passion, only caused indifference. The chaos arose especially when Cupid, to his amusement, shot one person with a leaden arrow and the other with a golden one. A golden arrow we see here - an arrow of love, which is meant to set the heart of the hit person into passion. The arrow is to be worn as a brooch and it was created in late Victorian England. The beautiful brooch is made entirely of gold, which is given a rich, velvety shimmer by an additional fine gold plating. The romantic piece of jewellery is beautifully preserved and is all the more suitable as a gift of love in times when its true meaning is only revealed to the initiated. Cf. for the present brooch, for example, the goods offered in the catalogue of Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, London 1901, reproduced in Peter Hinks (ed.): Viktorianischer Schmuck, Hildesheim/Zürich/New York 1996, e.g. p. 51.
