Pretty in Pink
Victorian Entourage Ring with Pink Sapphire, circa 1890
Through its colonies spanning the world, Great Britain was a great power in the 19th century, possessing not only political power but also wealth. No other country produced such precious jewellery during this time, and in such large numbers, as Great Britain. So it is not surprising that many jewels with large coloured stones and rich diamond settings were created in England, using imported gemstones from the mines of the colonies. Fine jewels were thus not only commissioned by the nobility using stones provided, but were more generally made for the stock and displays of fine jewellers' shops, from which the upper middle classes also purchased. The present ring bears the company mark inside of the jewellers Walter & George Myers, who were based in Birmingham, a centre of British jewellery production. At the center of the design is a large pink sapphire. Like ruby, sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum - and all corundum except red ruby is called sapphire. In Victorian times, the pink variety usually came from British Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and the special cut of the stone here also suggests this. A ring of twelve old-cut diamonds surrounds it, and two more set the shoulders of the ring. The stones are held in place by high-carat gold. Thanks to its compact shape with the short, firmly set claws, the ring can also be worn comfortably in everyday life.
