Victorian Gold Bangle with Rubies & Diamonds, circa 1900
In earlier times, bracelets and bangles were not only adornment but also status symbols: For they showed that their wearer did not have to perform any strenuous manual work during which the bangles would have been a nuisance. No wonder, then, that traditionally no bangles were worn in traditional costume jewellery - but that the jewellery of bourgeois women was all the more precious in this respect. This is also the case with this bangle from Great Britain, which is set with hand-cut gemstones. Two rubies and a pink tourmaline are set in alternation with old-cut diamonds. The three red to pink gemstones each have their own hue, yet harmonize with each other. The entire bangle is forged from gold and the sides are decorated with vine engravings. The exciting gemstones are set in so-called "gypsy" settings, which were very popular in the Victorian era. Usually called "flush mount setting" today, this technique is distinguished by the fact that it requires no prongs or claws. Instead, the stones or pearls were recessed so that they lay flat with the precious metal. The goldsmith then carved small channels around the stone in a star-like fashion, using the resulting chips to form small grains that formed the actual setting. Since the setting created in this way could not get stuck anywhere, it was particularly easy to wear and quickly became very fashionable. The bangle is well preserved and still has the original safety chain, which prevents it from accidentally slipping off the arm once it has been opened.
