An exciting year

Victorian gold ring with sapphire & diamonds, Birmingham 1887

The year 1887 was an eventful year and full of premieres: Construction work on the Eiffel Tower began in Paris in January. Verdi's Othello was premiered at La Scala in Milan to thunderous applause, and Saint-Saëns' opera Proserpine was premiered in Paris. In Washington, the gramophone was introduced, thanks to which these compositions were also at home in the living rooms of the world a few years later. This exciting year also saw the birth of the present ring. A sequence of stamps, the so-called hallmarks, tell us the exact year in which it was presented to the Assay Office in Birmingham. Stylistically, it fits exactly into this period: it showcases four slightly cushion-shaped old-cut diamonds and a dark blue sapphire set in high-carat yellow gold. To the left and right of the gemstones are engraved ornaments reminiscent of fleurs-de-lis. The design is simple yet rich in detail, and the ring itself is also wearable on a daily basis. This is ensured not only by the design as a band ring, but also by the setting of the gemstones. They are recessed into the gold and are held securely only by small chips, so that the ring does not get caught in fabrics. This made it ideal for the British lady of the Victorian era, whose rings often had sentimental significance, commemorated special events, or were gifts of love: Often several rings were worn side by side every day. The ring is excellently preserved and can still be worn daily today. We were able to discover it in London.
