Opal Fever

Victorian bracelet with opals & diamonds in gold, Birmingham circa 1895

Opals were a great fashion of the late Victorian era, as it was only during that time that Australian opals arrived in Britain from the overseas colonies. Before the discovery of precious opals in Australia, the mines in Dubník, then in Hungary, were the only European mine for precious opals, but Australian opals have far more brilliant colours. This led to a veritable opal craze, and no British jeweller of the years around 1900 could do without corresponding offerings in his assortment. The present bracelet sets three of these special stones, each iridescent in turquoise blue and pink. We had them re-polished by a gemstone cutter so that they shine again like on the first day. These are so-called crystal opals: they are characterized by slightly translucent bodies in which the color patterns seem to float like cosmic mists. If one holds such a crystal opal against the light, it shimmers peach-coloured; but if it is worn or backed with an opaque background, the green-blue colour intensifies. The opals are accompanied by six white old-cut diamonds. The bracelet is crafted from 15-carat gold, an alloy used only in Great Britain until 1932. An additional fine gold plating gives it a particularly rich shine. It bears the maker's mark of the firm of T. & J. Bragg Ltd, which was located in Vittoria Street, Birmingham. It is in very good condition.
