Vintage gold plated silver & enamel bracelet by Theodor Fahrner, 1950's

In the history of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry, Fahrner jewelry from Pforzheim occupies a special place. Fahrner made artists' jewelry affordable because he combined modern forms with democratic materials. He did not create unique pieces for a small elite like Lalique or Cartier, but the designs were mass-produced in silver, decorated with enamel, marcasites and occasionally precious stones. Jewelers and department stores throughout Europe sold the jewelry, which Fahrner advertised extensively in journals and magazines: "Fahrner Jewelry - based on designs by the best artists" allowed every woman to participate in a modern life full of beauty. Every year, traveling salesmen with large sample cases presented the new products developed in Pforzheim to local retailers. One such sample case had been slumbering untouched in an attic for the last 40-plus years until we were privileged to discover it. It contained samples of all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, mostly with a model number and bearing the "Original Fahrner" seal. The piece of jewelry here is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. It is a bracelet whose dynamically curved links are textured with filigree overlays and decorated with wavy patterns of light and dark blue enamel. A light gilding, the so-called gold wash, gives the solid silver design its characteristic color. Link bracelets with wavy filigree and enamel were created by Fahrner starting in the 1940s (see Theodor Fahrner. Schmuck zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition", ed. by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005, p. 229, cat. No. 2.180). However, this type of bracelet was so successful that it continued to be produced for several years; our bracelet was made in the 1950s. This is shown by the original TF label found on the bracelet, which was not used until the early 1950s. The TF seal as a mark of authenticity has also been preserved on the unworn piece of jewelry.
