Vintage ballerina ring with Colombian emerald, Berlin 1970
An emerald's colour, purity and origin all count towards its quality. The colour should remind us of the rich green of the rainforest. The inclusions should be few, although there are always some – the so-called "jardin" (garden) of an emerald. The preferred origin is Colombia, known to produce some of the finest emeralds in the world. The ring at hand focuses on a central emerald to which all these characteristics apply. Weighing 1.88 ct, the gemstone glows in a vivid, intense green and showcases a beautiful clarity. Its origin, Colombia, has been stated on the original document which its first owner received upon purchase: it was the 24th of December 1970, Christmas Eve, when he or she entered the shop of jeweller Alt on Berlin's luxurious Kurfürstendamm. The ring is of the so-called ballerina ring type, especially popular during the 1960s and 1970s. Other than a traditional cluster ring, which frames its central gemstone with brilliant cut diamonds, the ballerina ring uses baguette and trapeze cuts to recall the folds of a ballet dancer's fanned-out tutu, seen from above: almost as though one were looking out of an opera box at the ballerinas that Degas so loved to paint, for instance in the painting L'Étoile dating to 1878. A total of around 2.34 ct of diamonds have been arranged in a dynamic swirl framing the large emerald. High-carat white gold frames the gemstones subtly without taking away from their appearance. Both the original certificate of purchase dating to 1970 as well as an independent gemstone certificate will be delivered with the ring.
