Vintage diamond ring in high karat gold, circa 1975

The 1960s and 1970s were experimental in the development of unusual jewelry designs. In their search for innovative means of expression, the jewellery designers dealt intensively with the various currents of contemporary art. The aim was to create an independent abstract formal language of jewellery that would stand out from previous styles. Jewellery of this epoch explores the possibilities of the processed material and loves, for example, the contrast between reflective and matt surfaces and places organic-looking forms next to acurately cut gemstones. Interesting and unusual structures, daring volumes and expressive reliefs were in demand. The result was unique pieces of jewellery in which the traces of the manufacturing process were not hidden, but were to be confidently displayed as evidence of genuine craftsmanship. "Textures fascinate craftsmen today more than ever before", wrote Graham Hughes in his survey volume "Modern Jewelry", published in London in 1963. The ring presented here was created out of this contemporary trend, in the studio of a goldsmith probably in Germany. A band of high-carat yellow gold wraps powerfully around the finger. The design widens towards the front, setting three brilliant-cut diamonds. The diamonds are set in white gold. The ring band itself is forged from yellow gold, Deeply textured strikes like the bark of an old tree or waves on a stormy sea structure the surface. The design almost seems like a work of art, like one of the sculptures of the sculptors of the time.
