A Rose is a Rose

Vintage shell gem as brooch & pendant in gold, around 1980

A rose is a rose is a rose... When Gertrude Stein lyrically evoked the image of the rose in her famous poem "Sacred Emily" in 1913, she was looking back on a long tradition of rendering nature in the arts, in which the rose in particular is so richly laden with meaning. Floral motifs, and roses in particular, have been extremely popular in decorative design through the centuries. Much like a bouquet of flowers, they were an expression of affection and love, but unlike their organic cousins, they never wilted. Every era has used blossoms and, of course, their forms have been varied according to the tastes of the time. This graceful piece of jewellery thus follows in a long line of tradition and presents itself in a naturalistic form. In a setting of high-carat gold, it presents us with a shell gem of a lushly blossoming rose bush. The densely filled blossoms stand out particularly vividly against the dark background. This piece of jewellery was made around 1980 and can be worn both as a brooch and as a pendant. The cameo is very well preserved and for friends of flowers a wonderful happiness - and last but not least a wonderful gift.
