Coronation of Venus

Vintage shellgemme after Antonio Canova in gold & pearls, around 1980

Three ladies, goddesses, in flowing robes, stride towards us. Two of them hold a wreath of flowers. The middle one of the three gets it put on her head. Restrained and chaste, she crosses her arms in front of her chest, clearly looking forward to this award of beauty. This gem shows a motif that has been depicted hundreds of times in the history of gem carving. The model is an invention of Antonio Canova (1757-1822), probably the most famous Italian sculptor of classicism. In a drawing from the late 1790s, he had depicted the Three Graces crowning Venus with a wreath of flowers while Mars, the god of war, looks on (now in the Museo Canova in Possagno in the Veneto). Canova's imagery was very successful. Numerous sculptures, reliefs, prints were made by him and other artists after his drawing: And also shell-gemmen, like the one here. mostly the drawing was reduced to the central group of Venus with two of the three Graces - as a celebration of beauty and love. The shell gem is set in a broad frame of high-carat gold, which is set with shimmering pearls. The pearl is considered an attribute of the goddess of love, as she too was born from a pearl (according to legend)). Thus, in this pendant of the years around 1980, the love of antiquity, the admiration of the art of classicism and the celebration of the works of Venus combine into an indissoluble whole.
