Stars Shining Bright Above You

Vintage pearl & diamond star as brooch & pendant, 1970s

Stars shining bright above you Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you" Birds singing in the sycamore trees Dream a little dream of me... This star, which is both a pendant and a brooch, is a piece of fashion history: it has its origins in a long tradition that culminated in the 19th century and has continued to have an impact right up to the present day. On the one hand, stars were an expression of the enthusiasm for the Orient of the time, with its preference for exotic and foreign cultures. On the other hand, the enthusiasm for star motifs was due to the Empress of Austria, who introduced the motif of diamond stars to Viennese society and made them immortal classics in the history of jewellery. The most famous portrait of Sisi, painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, shows the young empress with a multitude of radiant diamond stars in her flowing dark hair, which were specially made for her by the Viennese court jeweller A. E. Köchert. After the publication of this portrait in the press, there was no stopping the ladies of Viennese society: every woman who could afford it wanted to come into possession of at least one such precious star in order to follow the fashion demonstrated by the empress. The piece of jewellery presented here is in keeping with this fashion. It is made of yellow gold and set with pearls. In the centre sparkles a brilliant-cut diamond in a setting of white gold. The star is on the one hand a brooch, but it can also be worn as a pendant with a concealed fold-out eyelet. The star was made in 1970s based on 19th century models. The hallmark suggests that it was made in the USA.
