To loving hands
Vintage pearl, ruby & diamond gold earrings, Germany circa 1975
Two natural rubies form the center of sparkling flowers of diamonds. Pendulously attached we see two large white pearls with a beautiful luster. The gemstones in this pair of earrings are set in gold and both the rubies and the diamonds convince with a beautiful color. However, the materials used here have a content component beyond their beauty, if you consult the "gem lore". In this language of gemstones, the pearl is associated with Venus, the goddess of love, who, like the pearl, was born from a shell. With the diamond, which stands for eternity, and the ruby as the classic love stone, the circle is closed in this noble pair of earrings and reveals their meaning as a gift of love. Already the Berlin journal "Der Bazar" wrote in November 1886: "Rubies are especially suitable for young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the symbol of the most passionate and ardent love, the pearl, on the other hand, that of purity of soul". The romantic earrings found their way to us here in Berlin and are waiting to be given away again with loving hands. They come with a detailed appraisal from the German Gemstone Appraisal Society.
The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum can be found in almost all colors of the rainbow, even completely colorless stones are among them. But while all these stones can also be addressed as sapphires, only the magnificently red stones of this mineral genus are rubies. Among the coloured stones, the ruby is by far the most valuable stone; only particularly high-quality pink, blue or green diamonds fetch higher prices today. Throughout history, the best rubies have always been mined in Burma, around the city of Mogok. They are characterized by an intense pink-red color, also known as "pigeon's blood". The best stones seem to glow as if from an inner fire, which is best visible in daylight: stones that still appear fantastically red in artificial light can appear washed out under the sun. According to tradition, rubies are divine, princely stones. Since color is reminiscent of blood and burning fire, their connection to burning love was quite natural. Supposedly, they even prevent disease and give proud, fresh courage. Indian princes therefore even had themselves addressed as "King of Rubies".
