Vintage snake ring in Victorian shapes, Porto, mid-20th century.

Snake rings were popular throughout the 19th century, and their meaning always reflected cultural sensitivities. At the beginning of the century, the snake was still closely linked to the meaning of the ouroboros and was seen as a symbol of eternity. Around the middle of the century, this meaning was transferred to specifically romantic contexts; Prince Albert, for example, gave Queen Victoria an engagement ring in the shape of a snake. At the end of the century, in the course of symbolism, the snake was again linked to the story of the Fall: snakes with open mouths staged their wearer as a femme fatale. The present snake ring pays homage to the taste of the years around 1860: in particular, the body patterned in royal blue and white enamel is characteristic as a reference to those years. In the old manner, the ring sets rose-cut diamonds in silver on the head of the snake, while the body and rail are made of gold. Rubies form the eyes, small emeralds visually separate the head from the coiling body. According to its hallmarks, the ring was made between 1938 and 1984 in the city of Porto in Portugal. We have often received pieces of jewellery from Portugal that were not forged until the 20th century, but were still lovingly made using the old techniques and designs of bygone days. This ring is a fine example of this.
