The charm of the classic
Vintage solitaire ring with 3,45 ct river old cut brilliant in white gold, around 1960
A ring with a single, large diamond is considered the classic engagement ring today. Here, the precious (and, according to legend, indestructible) stone stands for eternity - which is thus meant to underline the duration of the promise made with it. Significant for this connection was the New York jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany. Tiffany first marketed such rings through his mail-order catalog in 1886 and specifically promoted them as engagement gifts. In fact, however, the tradition of seeing a diamond ring as a symbolic piece of jewelry is far older. As early as 1477, it is said, Duchess Mary of Burgundy received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband Maximilian of Habsburg. This ring made of high-carat white gold presents itself in the classic form of a solitaire. The sparkling diamond of 3.45 ct is a so-called old cut, a brilliant cut already in the years around 1910. It has been graduated as a high fine white (River, E), few small natural inclusions inside it make it distinctive among all diamonds. They do not tarnish the brilliance of the excellent stone. Delicate, understated claws hold the sparkling stone and lift it stylishly above the finger. The hand-forged ring band of high-carat white gold displays a simple and classic shape. Created in the second half of the 20th century for what was then already an antique brilliant-cut diamond, the ring is in first-class condition. An independent appraisal has confirmed the quality of the stone.
