Entourage in red and white
Vintage white gold ring with ruby & diamonds, circa 1980
The present ring sets two kinds of precious stones: In the center of the oval ring face shines a ruby in intense red. Raised slightly above the ring face by a prong setting, twelve white brilliant-cut diamonds frame the precious center stone. All stones are set in high-carat white gold, which enhances their color effect. In terms of jewelry history, this is also a meaningful gemstone combination, because in the language of gemstones, the ruby was once considered the stone of love, while the diamond, due to its great hardness, was understood as a symbol of eternity. The piece of jewelry is a classic entourage ring. Entourage (from company, entourage) refers to rings whose center stone is accompanied by a wreath of diamonds. Already known and popular in past centuries, this ring shape became especially popular in the second half of the 20th century, when rings like this one were set with preference in white gold. Our ring from around 1980 is beautifully preserved and found its way to us from Berlin.
The ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum to which also the sapphire belongs. With its fiery appearance, the ruby is one of the most precious gemstones, surpassed only by the diamond. Really first-class rubies are found only in a few places on earth. Most famous are the mines of the city of Mogok in Mynanmar (Burma). The best stones from this site are characterized by a particularly intense red coloration which is called pigeon's blood.
