Funny safety pin brooch with jade inlay, 1970s
Many little everyday helpers are so common and everyday that we often can hardly imagine that even these little things once had to be invented. To get along without them seems so difficult that it seems inconceivable that they have not always existed. The zipper is one such example, the Velcro fastener, or also: the safety pin. In fact, the safety pin was invented by the American inventor Walter Hunt, who applied for a patent in 1849. It quickly went on to conquer the world, so much so that in France it is still known (not entirely correctly) as the "épingle anglaise". A small, often overlooked everyday helper - but at the same time an opportunity to create a funny brooch. For this piece, a goldsmith from the 1970s took up precisely this motif and transformed it into precious jewellery. The pin, made of high-carat yellow gold, is functional like its model. But at the same time, it bears an inlay of lime-green jade, which decorates it to great effect. We were able to acquire the brooch in the distinguished Berlin district of Dahlem. It can be worn as a funny brooch on any slightly stronger fabric such as a coat or sweater, or as a winking clasp on a scarf.
