The lady of the 19th century

Wonderful agate cameo as locket brooch & pendant in gold, around 1880

This piece of jewelry from the end of the 19th century is made of gold and can be worn as a brooch and as a pendant. It shows a finely cut cameo of two-tone agate on the front. Depicted is a youthful lady delicately standing out against the slightly darker background. The relief is cut in extraordinary detail and amazes especially by the fine execution of the hair, which is held by ribbons and the dress of the lady, which is richly decorated with pearl jewelry. The finely cut cameo in layered agate, was created in Germany in the years around 1880. The view of the sitter exudes the sumptuous style of those years, which is also reflected in the elaborate framing. Forged from 18-karat gold and hand-decorated with fine garnets and half-arches, we see here elements of the so-called Archaeological style, bringing the design of Etruscan jewelry into the 19th century. Six natural pearls in architrave settings effectively hold the cameo. On the back there is a glazed compartment, which can be used as a locket and can be equipped with a lock of hair or a photo. The unknown master who cut the cameo probably worked in the small town of Idar, which today as Idar-Oberstein is still the center of the gemstone trade in Germany. Two-colored hardstone with its white and darker stripes was a popular material to make jewelry from even in classical antiquity: The high-level gem-cutting culture in the city in the Hunsrück region then created cameos of admirable beauty from this material in the 19th century as well. Stone carvings of this quality are extremely rare - today they are coveted collector's items and art chamber pieces of their own rank.
