In borrowed plumes

Beautiful vintage brooch with diamonds in white gold, Germany around 1965

Light as a real feather, this brooch made of high-carat white gold appears so soft. And yet, weighing around 11 grams and set with 14 diamonds, it is a stately, precious object. The desire to adorn oneself with feathers is as old as man himself. In Europe at the end of the 19th century, it was very fashionable to decorate hats, fans, accessories and entire dresses with feathers. Those of exotic birds were particularly popular, as hardly any hat was complete without heron feathers, the long tail feathers of pradies or the bushy feathers of ostriches - some over a metre long, some tiny and in all the colours of the rainbow. In 1886, Frank Chapman, an ornithologist at the American Museum of Natural History, determined that 542 of 700 hats worn by ladies in New York had feathers or even whole birds attached. At that time, an estimated five million birds were killed annually solely to provide feathers for fashion items. In 1892, the single shipment for a feather shop in London consisted of the feathers of about 6,000 birds of paradise, 40,000 hummingbirds, and 360,000 birds from the Caribbean. Fortunately, this beautiful feather-shaped brooch is not made from the exotic feather of an endangered bird, but gleams in striking white gold with a satin finish. Fourteen small diamonds set its keel. The brooch was created in the years around 1965 and came to us from the distinguished Berlin district of Dahlem. Now it is waiting to adorn a blazer at an exciting premiere, a beautiful evening dress at a cocktail evening or a pretty costume at an elegant dinner - without a guilty conscience!
